Members of the Afghan community in Ottawa gathered over the weekend to celebrate both Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz, highlighting unity and shared cultural traditions among migrants in Canada.
The event took place on Saturday (21 March 2026) and was hosted by the Afghanistan-Canada Council, a social and cultural organisation. A large number of Afghan residents attended the event.

Emphasis on unity and shared values
Opening the event, Najib Aqa Fahim thanked participants for their attendance and spoke about the significance of cultural occasions. He said celebrations such as Eid and Nowruz help strengthen social bonds, promote ethical values, and inspire hope within the community.
He also expressed appreciation to the City of Ottawa for providing a venue for the event.
Calls for stronger community cohesion
Hassan Soroush, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Canada, stressed the importance of unity among Afghan migrants. He said that celebrating cultural traditions plays a key role in building cooperation and solidarity within the diaspora.

David Hill, a councillor for Barrhaven, also addressed the gathering. He shared memories from his time in Afghanistan and spoke about the hospitality and resilience of Afghan people, describing them as among his most meaningful experiences.
Traditional displays and celebrations
The event featured traditional elements, including Haft-Seen and Haft-Mewa, along with a variety of sweets and festive foods prepared by participants.
Organisers said such gatherings aim to preserve cultural heritage while strengthening connections among Afghans living abroad.
